Let Patty Do It Newsletter #9

Welcome to the Let Patty Do It News and Tips Newsletter issue number 9.

Greetings friends. It is August already!  The summer certainly is flying by and it has been eventful.

My mother died on June 11th and it has reminded me of a lot of questions that people have asked me about how and where to get rid of stuff.  It can seem overwhelming, even when the wishes of your loved one are known.  There are still many questions that possibly didn’t occur to you and many official things that you just aren’t aware of if you haven’t experienced the death of a close relative.
Here are some of the places and things to know about:
For clothing:
The Gathering Place
Heritage Cleaners will accept clothes to be given to the Gathering Place
Any of the charities you use will take clothing.  It is more difficult to find places to take furniture but the following places do:

Mattresses and furniture:
The Lupus Foundation  303-231-9337
The Ecumenical Refugee Service-303-860-0128
Family Thrift Centers-303-455-8788
Salvation Army
You may have found out how difficult it is to get rid of old mattresses and furniture.  Salvation Army will give these to shelters and Habitat for Humanity

Old documents:
The Better Shredder-303-426-5722
I have used this service myself.  It’s slick!  For $45 they come to your house and shred 400 lbs. of paper!  I didn’t have that much, but it was great to see 8 boxes of tax information and old checks vanish in an instant.
Unfortunately, you must go through all the documents first to be sure there is nothing of value.  Until a few years ago, our social security numbers were on everything.  These must be shredded.  Your home office shredder is probably not up to the task!  You can take documents to various sites or you can call a company to come to your location with a shredder truck and take care of it right there!

Having just gone through this, I have a few more suggestions:

  • Order of copy of Five Wishes
                FILL IT OUT
I ordered one over a year ago and set it aside. Now I know to fill it out and follow through with it. Please do the same or something similar.
You can get a copy at: http://www.agingwithdignity.org/5wishes.pdf
  • Make sure your family knows your wishes for burial, services etc.
  • Order a dozen death certificates or more.  Retirement IRA’s require a different certificate for each fund!
  • Make a list of things that are valuable to you. Just because things don’t have big monetary value, doesn’t mean you don’t want your family to think about how much it meant to you.
  • Also, sometimes you have something that you bought like artwork, that might be valuable now.  At least put original artwork bought in 19—on a small tag on the back of the frame or somewhere easy to find.  That way, hopefully, it won’t go in the trash or the garage sale for $1.  We’ve all seen Antiques Roadshow where people have picked up wonderful things that the sellers had no idea of the value.

    Now a word about staging!

You are probably aware that the real estate market is anything but “HOT” if you’re trying to sell your house!  There are lots of buyers, but they are extremely picky, because they can be.  Realtors that I work with are telling me that they are showing a minimum of 25 properties to buyers and even then, not necessarily closing the deal!  If your home is on the market or you’re thinking of putting it on the market.  Please think about staging!  Only the best priced, best looking homes are selling.  Sometimes it just takes a little extra curb appeal and some furniture placement to give your house that WOW that is more necessary than ever.

Next month I’ll be giving you some tips on back to school.

Sometimes the best use of your time is to hire a professional!  I would love to help you and I always welcome referrals for which I will give you one free hour of organizing for every referral that you send me that turns into an actual job!

If you have a group that might enjoy a short presentation about organizing, please call me.  I would love to speak to your group!  If it’s in the South Metro area, I will speak for free!

    Have a clutter free Summer!
