The Holidays are coming!
You know what that means - the sinking feeling in the pit of
your stomach and the thought “I’ve got to get organized!” Whether
the disdain you feel from your relatives and friends is real
or imagined, now it the time to think about getting control.
Is
your usual strategy to throw everything in a bag or box and put
it in the basement? Sometimes when we have waited too long, that’s
the only solution because company is only 30 minutes away. If
this is what you do, remember to use clear containers and place
a piece of paper on the inside that says “Papers
from dining room table 10/05 or Things to be ironed 10/05.
If you can’t see what’s in that bag or box, you
are setting yourself up for more work!
If the bags and boxes are still down there from last year-throw
them away!!! If you haven’t needed them for the whole year,
there’s nothing important in them. If you just have to
look, do a quick sift through, just in case you’re still
looking for you wedding ring or those diamond earrings that disappeared.
You’ll rile up the spiders- ugh- and then out it all goes.

Is last year’s resolution still unattained? Start now.
It doesn’t have to take all day to clear off the dining
room table the right way.
Here are the steps:
- Start by putting everything in a box. Aha! That’s what
the table looks like!
- Put the box on the floor or on a large table.
- Quickly (quickly is the key) the coupon
books, catalogs and junk mail that we get so much of is OUT
OF HERE! Don’t look through it just pitch it! You’ll
get more next month.
- Then, use First principle of organizing-put like
things together. Receipts, together, school papers,
bills, correspondence-do you get letters anymore? All of
these things get their own separate pile.
- The sock, glove, sewing scissors etc go into to a container
that holds things that go to other rooms. Don’t take
them now-you’ll get sidetracked.
- When your have your piles of stuff, then sit down with one
pile at a time and think FAT-File, Act, Toss.
- Start that school binder-one per child. Make a file for receipts.
When you’ve gotten through all the piles and acted upon
them pat yourself on the back-you are taking back Control!
